Book Thoughts: Vagina Monologues

Finished reading Vagina Monologues today. It was a quick read, not too heavy, but it contained a lot of powerful ideas. They weren’t ideas that really moved me as they were ones that I share generally, being fairly socially liberal and sensitive to minority rights.

I’m glad to have grown up in a society which has opened its eyes to how women should be treated. I can see how the play is a very empowering piece, and I wish more people would be exposed to it. Hopefully, I’ll catch a show some day.

Big picture points

1) People should respect vaginas. Women should not be ashamed of their vaginas. Vaginas are wonderful.

2) Circumstantially, the play also deals with pregnancy and abuse. Empowerment of women and their vagina will help in combating abuse while showcasing how amazing birth is.

3) When one takes back ownership over their body, in this case one’s vagina, it becomes powerful. As humans, we are not solely our body, but our body represents something whole about ourselves. If we do not have a strong relationship with our body, we lose a large piece of ourselves.
